Hanabi is a cooperative card game built around one clever idea: you cannot see your own cards. Instead, you hold your cards facing away from yourself so that everyone else at the table can see them. Your teammates can see which cards you have, but they cannot directly tell you what to play. On your turn, you must either give another player a clue, play a card, or discard a card to regain a clue token.
The team’s objective is to build five different fireworks displays by playing cards of each colour in numerical order from 1 through 5. The information you receive from your teammates is deliberately limited. A clue can tell you which cards are a particular colour or which cards have a particular number, so you need to remember exactly what you were told and work out what that information means for your hand.
Playing a card at the wrong time can cause the team to lose a fuse token, while discarding useful cards can make it impossible to complete a fireworks display. At the same time, clue tokens are limited, so players cannot simply give each other unlimited information. Hanabi therefore becomes a game of communication, memory, deduction, and teamwork, where the group must develop an effective way of sharing information without directly giving away the answer.
