In Marrakech, players become carpet merchants competing to become the most successful trader in the bustling markets. On your turn, roll the die to determine how far Assam, the market inspector, moves. You must then place one of your rugs adjacent to your current position, attempting to cover as much of the board as possible while avoiding giving your opponents profitable opportunities.
Whenever Assam lands on another player’s rug, that player receives payment based on the number of visible rug spaces in the connected area. This means that where you place your rugs matters enormously. Covering another player’s rug can reduce their influence, but placing your own rugs in large connected areas can also generate valuable income when Assam lands on them.
The game continues as players gradually fill the market with colourful rugs. Once all rugs have been placed, players count their remaining money and the visible portions of their rugs. The wealthiest merchant wins. With simple rules, tactile components, colourful artwork, and plenty of opportunities to block and outmanoeuvre opponents, Marrakech combines luck, spatial planning, and tactical decision-making in an accessible strategy game.
